Woodbridge Chamber Concerts 2017

This series offered three concerts in St Mary’s Woodbridge on Saturday evenings in May, starting with Marta Kowalczyk violin and Somi Kim piano on 6th May; The Artesian Quartet on 13th May; and The Alke Quartet with Bryony Gibson-Cornish viola and Lisa Maria Cooper horn on 20th May.  Click here for the series website.

Frinton Festival 2017

This enterprising small-scale seaside festival runs again from Friday 26 May to Monday 29 May, with five concerts focusing on chamber music by Mozart and Dvorak. Each concert also contains music by a living composer. This year for the first time there is a FREE chamber music “acoustic Showcase” with a light-hearted selection of string quartets at Kirby-le-Soken’s Red Lion pub at 8pm on Sunday 7 May. Music at Thornham 2017

Halesworth Arts Festival 2017

Aldeburgh Festival 2017

The seventieth Aldeburgh Festival runs from 9 to 25 June.  Click here for more details. This year, as 50 years ago, the Festival will present Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They will also feature a second Britten opera, with Opera North’s staging of Billy Budd, a work never previously performed at Snape.

Norfolk & Norwich Chamber Music 2017-2018

Roman River Music Festival 2017

The festival offers more than twenty-five music, dance and theatre performance in Colchester and neighbouring villages between 14 September and 1 October. Performers include Benjamin Grosvenor, Alina Ibragimova, The King’s Singers, Natalie Clein and the Syrian Kanun player Maya Youssef, as well as some outstanding new stars. Click here for more details.

The Oxford Chamber Music Festival 2017

The Oxford Chamber Music Festival was founded in 2000 by the Oxford born violinist Priya Mitchell and has gained a reputation for being one of the most exciting music festivals in Europe. This year it runs from 27 September to 1 October 2017. Click here for more details.

Aldeburgh Music Winter Chamber Series 2017

Details have already been announced of the ever-popular Friday lunchtime concert series at the Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh, based around young performers having residencies at Snape. Thirteen concerts run every Friday from 6 January through to 31 March (with the concert on 3 March in the Britten Studio at Snape): for more details and booking information, click here.

William Alwyn Festival 2016

The sixth version of this annual festival runs from 5 to 9 October, with concerts in Blythburgh, Snape and Orford and a showing of feature films with Alwyn music on the soundtrack at the Electric Picture Palace in Southwold. Performers include Gregor Riddell, familiar to Cratfield audiences as cellist of the Solstice Quartet, Nicholas Daniel oboe, who played at the first Cratfield concert this year, and Sarah-Jane Bradley viola, who appeared at Cratfield in 2015 with the Aquinas Piano Trio.  Chamber music enthusiasts will also be interested in the Tippett Quartet concert, which includes Mendelssohn and Haydn alongside quartets by Alwyn and his second wife Doreen Carwithen. Halesworth Arts Festival 2016

This festival, based at The Cut and now in its 15th year, runs from 8 to 23 October 2016.  Of likely interest to Cratfield concertgoers will be the concert by the Carducci String Quartet (with Gemma Rosefield cello) on Monday 10 October – the programme includes Mozart String quartet K458 (‘The Hunt’), the Philip Glass String quartet no 2 and the Schubert String quintet in C D956.  Piano enthusiasts will also want to hear John Lill on Tuesday 18 October, who plays Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann in his solo recital.  For more details of all events in the Festival, and for online booking, click here.  Or for bookings by phone, call 01986 874264.

The Old Granary Studio 2016

Now in its sixteenth season and run by Jill and Andrew Giller (from whom we hire pianos), this series offers eight concerts on Saturday or Sunday evenings between April and December 2016 in atmospheric and intimate surroundings just north of Beccles – with the possibility of a pre-concert supper.  Performers include Piers Lane piano, Chloe Hanslip violin and Danny Driver piano and the Piatti Quartet with Julius Drake piano.  Full details and booking information is available from the series website: www.oldgranarystudio.co.uk.

Peasenhall Assembly Hall

Potton Hall

Aldeburgh Festival 2016

The sixty-ninth Aldeburgh Festival ended on Sunday 26 June.  Highlights for chamber music regulars included a sequence of Tippett and Britten concerts, featuring the Heath Quartet, who then come to Cratfield on 17 July.  And the piano was centre stage almost from the start, combined with a birdsong theme in Messiaen’s complete Catalogue d’Oiseaux.

Woodbridge Chamber Concerts 2016

This series offered three concerts in St Mary’s Woodbridge on Saturday evenings in May, starting with the Sacconi Quartet, Gary Matthewman piano and Alexander Sprague tenor performing Vaughan Williams and Elgar on 7 May (preceded by an afternoon symposium on the two composers); the Benyounes Quartet and Philip Higham cello performing ‘Last Things’ (late works by Bach, Haydn and Schubert) on 21 May; and string quartets by Haydn and Ravel plus the Mendelssohn Octet (the Ruisi and Alke Quartets) in the final concert on 28 May.  Click here for the series website.

Tessa Fuchs Chamber Series 2016 in Halesworth

This well established series offered four Sunday concerts at The Cut at 3pm in the winter, including the prizewinning Hieronymus Quartet playing Mendelssohn, Jörg Widmann and Beethoven on Sunday 21 February; Hexachordia playing music from Shakespeare’s time on Sunday 6 March and the Marmen Quartet playing Haydn, Beethoven and Elgar on Sunday 20 March.

There was also an extra concert at The Cut by Ji Liu piano on Sunday 17 April at 7.30pm, where he played Rzewski, Chopin, Saint-Saëns and Debussy.

The Carducci String Quartet and Shostakovich in Aldeburgh: September 2015

This string quartet, well known to Cratfield audiences, brought their ambitious cycle of all the fifteen Shostakovich string quartets to the Jubilee Hall Aldeburgh, in four concerts over the weekend of Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September.  This was the first performance of all the quartets in Suffolk since the Sorrel Quartet did so at Cratfield in September 1999.  Click here for a review of the Carducci’s latest CD, of songs by Ian Venables with Roderick Williams baritone.
